Brillante Mendoza’s Foster Child to be screened in Bangkok

Brillante Mendoza’s Foster Child to be screened in Bangkok

Brillante Mendoza’s film to be screened at NETPAC’s 25th anniversary in Bangkok.

“Foster Child”, one of Brillante Mendoza masterpieces, will be screened in Bangkok on October 12, 2015 in a special film event to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC).

This is a simple and moving story of Thelma, from a poor urban family, who is hired by a local foster care facility to provide a temporary home for abandoned babies until they are formally adopted.

The abandoned baby in this case is the adorable John-John, whom Thelma lovingly feeds, bathes, and takes to school on her last day with him, before he is adopted by a wealthy American family.

The diverse scenarios and tones almost divide the film into two halves. The happy, cheerful caring Thelma is broken when she’s separated from her foster child.

NETPAC is composed of well-known filmmakers, artists and critics, and others who serve on NETPAC juries at more than 40 film festivals around the world.

Admission is free for FCCT members while 150 baht will be charged for non-members.

Foster Child is a 104 – minute film which tells the story of Thelma (Cherry Pie Picache), together with her husband Dado (Dan Alvaro) and teenage sons Gerald (Alwyn Uytingco) and Yuri (Jiro Manio). They are urban poor family hired by a local foster care facility to provide temporary home and care to abandoned babies pending the latter’s formal adoption.

Screening starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) at the penthouse floor of Maneeya Bldg in Chidlom with Mendoza gracing the event along with Dr. Aruna Vasudev, founder and president of the India-based NETPAC.

Sarajevo Film Festival Tribute

Sarajevo Film Festival Tribute

This year, Sarajevo Film Festival is honored to pay tribute to one of the most original and prolific contemporary filmmakers- Philippine director Brillante Mendoza.

Mendoza does not shy away from difficult subjects. In his films, he has tackled issues such as incest, bigamy, crime or prostitution. His great skill is in portraying the everyday hardship of Filipino people with authenticity and originality, thereby also successfully resisting the pitfalls of banality. Taking full advantage of what new possibilities lightweight cinema has to offer, he imbues his films with a sensuality that seamlessly transports an audience into a completely different yet tangible reality.

The SFF tribute to Brillante Mendoza allows audiences to take a voyage across Mendoza’s work, marked by striking examples of how close he comes to blurring the lines between fiction and documentary, and of the political motivations that inspire his filmmaking.

Sarajevo Film Festival dates: August 14-22, 2015
