Brillante Mendoza: A Retrospective Exhibit

Brillante Mendoza has been known for having etched out a Filipino space in the global landscape of cinema, now the Metropolitan Museum of Manila hosts his very first local retrospective exhibit.

The Metropolitan Museum of Manila held an exclusive preview of the Brillante Mendoza: A Contemporary Filipino Filmmaker exhibit last Saturday, September 3, 2016. This exhibit is a part of the museum’s celebration of its 40th anniversary, which will feature further exhibitions that aim to commemorate the development of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Art Collection, among many others.

LOLA at TIFF 2015

Tokyo International Film Festival 2015:

Wilson Tieng, CEO of major distribution company Solar Entertainment Corporation, and distributor of ‘Lola’ with Brillante Mendoza during the Q&A session.

Brillante Mendoza has five films in this years TIFF – Lola, Serbis, Foster Child, Thy Womb and Taklub. He is also part of the omnibus project called Asian Three Fold Mirror where he will be having a collaboration with filmmakers from Japan and Cambodia.

Mr. Tieng also attended a symposium called “Young Filipino filmmakers: What is the Third Golden Age of Philippine cinema?” was held on October 26 at the 28th Tokyo International Film Festival.

28th Tokyo International Film Festival

The 28th TIFF opening held on Wednesday – October 22, 2015 at Roppongi Hills, there were also activities at Shinjuku Wald 9, Shinjuku Piccadilly, TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku and other theaters in Tokyo.

The Red Carpet was held at Roppongi Hills, started with the appearance of Pepper, the world’s first robot to understand human emotions.

Last year, Japan Foundation Asia Center and the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) together launched “CROSSCUT ASIA”, the showcase of Asian films focusing on particular countries, directors, actors, and themes. This year, as the second project, it will focus on Philippine films.

Brillante Mendoza’s TAKLUB (2015) and ‘Thy Womb’ (2012) are among the 10 Filipino films selected to be showcased at the Asia Crosscut section of the 28th Tokyo International Film Festival.

Interview with international press

Brillante Mendoza, together with Vladimir Posner serves as chairman for the critics jury at ‪Message To Man‬ International Film Festival, an international competitive documentary, short and animated film festival held annually in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Message to Man is the only international documentary, short, animated and experimental film festival in Russia officially registered by FIAPF. It has more than 20 years’ history and it has always been a very significant event in the Russian cinema culture.

Every year the Festival presents over 30 Russian premieres. More than 200 films from around the world are screened in the competition and special programs. On average the festival receives about 3000 films for selection each year.
This year is the anniversary of the festival – Message to Man which was founded 25 years ago and for all this time this festival was showing the viewers only the best documentary, short, animated and experimental films.
