First acting award of the Philippines from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival

Award winning director, Brillante Mendoza gives life to the story “Ma’Rosa” about corrupted police officials who sets up a buy-bust operation on husband (Julio Diaz) and wife (Jaclyn Jose) selling drugs while using their convenience store as a cover up. Brillante Mendoza commends his stars for his 69th film entry at the Cannes Film Festival

Ma’ Rosa takes place in the slums of Manila. A married couple (played by Jaclyn Jose and Julio Diaz) run a convenience store that sells illegal substances, particularly shabu (crystal meth). When the couple gets arrested in a buy-bust operation, their three children (Andi Eigenmann, Felix Roco, and Jomari Angeles) do everything they can to save them from corrupt cops.

It also stars Baron Geisler, Mon Confiado, Mercedes Cabral, Neil Ryan Sese, Maria Isabel Lopez, Allan Paule, Ruby Ruiz, and Mark Anthony Fernandez.

Please tell us something about your collaboration with the European Union.

It won’t be difficult for us to shoot there, kasi may supporta naman tayo sa European Union.”

Direk Brillante: “Well, siyempre masaya.

Based on a true-to-life story po ba ang istorya ng Ma’Rosa?

How would you describe ang portrayal nilang dalawa bilang mag-ina sa pelikulang ito?

Direk Brillante: “Napakagaling nila! Maganda yung collaboration nilang dalawa as actors. Hindi mo maiisip na mag-ina sila in real life.”

Kaya lang, since my films kasi have distributors abroad, pag na translate mo yung Palit-Ulo, it means ‘Trade-Off,’ masyado nang give-away yung kwento.

I think, this is a wake-up call for our countrymen, for the people also na nasa gobyerno.

MALLGOERS will have the rare opportunity to view internationally acclaimed film director Brillante Mendoza’s award winning film and to meet the filmmaker up close during the Brillante Mendoza Film Appreciation Workshop at SM Seaside City Cebu cinema on March 17.

The festival will showcase the newest film of Director Mendoza—“Taklub”—through a film appreciation workshop which will give an in-depth view of the making of a masterpiece from Director Mendoza’s point of view. Topbilled by Nora Aunor, “Taklub” is a story of three major characters—Bebeth, Larry and Erwin, whose lives intertwine after the super typhoon Haiyan ravaged the city of Tacloban, leaving survivors to search for their dead, while keeping their sanity intact, and protecting what little faith there may be.

Moreover, Mendoza is also a Festival Director of Sinag Maynila which he co-founded with Solar Entertainment Corporation CEO and President Wilson Tieng
