Ma’ Rosa deals U.S. Distributor

Ma’ Rosa,” the country’s entry in the best foreign language film category of the Academy Awards, has found a distributor in the United States, filmmaker Brillante Ma Mendoza told the Inquirer.

First Run Features has acquired the US rights to the Filipino movie, which won best actress for Jaclyn Jose at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

“I’m glad that First Run is interested in our film,” Mendoza said. “The company has a good reputation as far as distributing art-house films is concerned.”

FDCP to push for Oscar nomination of ‘Ma’ Rosa’

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) would help get the Brillante Ma Mendoza movie, “Ma’ Rosa,” nominated in the best foreign language film category of the 2017 US Academy Awards.

“Since the current thrust of the FDCP is to help in the marketing and distribution of local films, we have promised to help ‘Ma’ Rosa’ in its promotional campaign. I told Direk Brillante that the council would look into the proposal that his team presented,” said FDCP chair Liza Diño.

Diño also appealed to industry people and the private sector for help during the FDCP-organized “A Celebration of Philippine Cinema” on Tuesday night at the Cinematheque Center in Ermita, Manila.

First Run Features picks ‘Ma’ Rosa’

First Run Features (FRF) announces that it has acquired U.S. rights from Paris based Films Distribution for Brillante Mendoza’s critically acclaimed drama, “Ma’ Rosa.”

First Run Features is a theatrical and home video distributor that has released independent, documentary and foreign films in the United States since 1979.

The official Oscar entry from the Philippines, “Ma’ Rosa” tells the story of a poor family in Manila that sells drugs on the side to make ends meet, amidst the backdrop of police corruption.

FRF is planning a Spring 2017 release.

The deal was negotiated by Mauceri and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, partner and co-founder of Films Distribution.

FRF previously released Mendoza’s 2012 film “Captive,” based on the real-life kidnapping of 20 tourists from a luxury resort in the Philippines in 2001. The film starred Isabelle Huppert as one of the hostages.
